It’s hard to pick up the phone when life is not going too well; you might think other people have it much worse than you! We also may feel a bit silly or stupid for making a fuss about our situation. It’s not indulgent to get support – I think it’s actually very good self care. You might like to think of therapy as personal development for your very self.
It doesn’t matter how big or small your stuff is, it’s your stuff and if you are affected by it then it’s important enough to get some help because you are important and we all have a right to feel safe, happy and well – and the only thing that would be silly is to struggle on your own when you don’t have to.
I won’t think you are silly at all or stupid. I think if you have made the brave decision to share your world with me, then you should be treated with kind compassionate care. Our work together is also confidential, so it’s safe here to talk freely.
I won’t laugh or judge or be shocked with what you bring; our lives are messy complicated and I am not here to tell you how to live your life but I am here to help you make sense of your world if you need some help. We make mistakes as humans and we sometimes get it wrong. We can feel ashamed of this but I have made mistakes too – everyone does – and the only thing we can do is make sense of them, leave the shame behind and learn from them.
